Bunionectomy/Bunion Removal Surgery

Knowing What to Expect

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming or scary if you don’t know what to expect. You may have some unanswered questions and worries that make you feel this way. Knowing what to expect will help you feel less nervous and more in control.

A bunionectomy is a surgery used to remove a painful bump on the toe called a bunion. Bunions are normally caused by misalignment or enlargement of bones of the big toe pressing against neighboring toes.

Shoes, especially ill fitting shoes or high heels, can cause the bunion to become worse. There are some non surgical treatments that can be tried, but if they fail to work, surgery may be needed to correct the condition. In the procedure, an incision will be made in the top of the big toe or in the side of the foot.

Then, some of the bone can be removed. Most patients who have had a bunionectomy will have the condition corrected due to the surgery.
