A diagnostic laryngoscopy is a procedure in which the surgeon examines your larynx, or voice box, with a laryngoscope. A laryngoscope is a tube that has a camera attached that allows the surgeon to see inside your larynx.
Laryngoscopies can be done to discover the reason for ear or throat pain, to determine the cause for trouble swallowing, if the patient feels a lump in the throat, or to check injuries of the throat.
In the cases of feeling a lump, a biopsy may be performed at the same time as the laryngoscopy.
