Arthrodesis

Knowing What to Expect

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming or scary if you don’t know what to expect. You may have some unanswered questions and worries that make you feel this way. Knowing what to expect will help you feel less nervous and more in control.

Arthrodesis is a surgery done to fuse the bones in a joint together. It is done to help treat pain that is not able to be managed by other pain relief options such as medication or splints. Usually, arthrodesis is done for the joints in the hand, ankle, foot and spine.

And the pain is normally caused by fractures in the joint, arthritis or a severe sprain.

There are several ways your surgeon could go about fusing the bones, and once the surgery is over, there won’t be anymore motion between the two fused bones.
