Gastrocnemius Recession

Knowing What to Expect

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming or scary if you don’t know what to expect. You may have some unanswered questions and worries that make you feel this way. Knowing what to expect will help you feel less nervous and more in control.

A gastrocnemius recession is used to treat the symptoms of a tight calf muscle. When your calf muscle, or gastrocnemius, is too tight, it can make it difficult to bend your foot backward.

In the surgery, the gastrocnemius is lengthened. This is done by making an incision on the back of the leg, and cutting the gastrocnemius to lengthen the calf muscle. Once this is done, the muscle is either left to heal, or is sutured to the tissue in the position the surgeon puts it in.

After the surgery, the patient will have better ankle motion
