Hammertoe Surgery / 2 Toes

Knowing What to Expect

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming or scary if you don’t know what to expect. You may have some unanswered questions and worries that make you feel this way. Knowing what to expect will help you feel less nervous and more in control.

Hammertoe is a condition of the toe in which the toe bends upward in the middle at the joint. There are a few different surgery options depending on the flexibility of your toe. If it is flexible and can be straightened, a tendon transfer can be used.

The tendons from the bottom of the toe are redirected to the top of the toe to straighten the toe.

If it is stiff, the surgeon may perform a joint resection, or a fusion. After the surgery is over, you will need to wear a special shoe to help you walk.
