Knowing What to Expect

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming or scary if you don’t know what to expect. You may have some unanswered questions and worries that make you feel this way. Knowing what to expect will help you feel less nervous and more in control.

An esophagogastroduodenoscopy, or EGD, is a test used to examine the lining of your esophagus, stomach and the start of the small intestine. This would be done if you have symptoms having to do with the stomach that cannot be explained or are not responding to any kinds of treatments.

It is performed by a surgeon using an endoscope, which is a flexible tube with a camera and a light attached.

It is also possible to perform a biopsy through the tube. The EGD is done to try to see why you are having the symptoms you are having.
