Knowing What to Expect

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming or scary if you don’t know what to expect. You may have some unanswered questions and worries that make you feel this way. Knowing what to expect will help you feel less nervous and more in control.

An EGD is a test used to examine the lining of your esophagus, stomach and the start of the small intestine. This would be done if you have symptoms having to do with the stomach that cannot be explained or are not responding to any kinds of treatments.

It is performed by a surgeon using an endoscope, which is a flexible tube with a camera and a light attached. A colonoscopy is a test done to examine the lining of the colon, or large intestine.

It is done using a colonoscope, a thin flexible tube with a camera and a light on the end to allow the doctor to see the inside of the colon. Sometimes an EGD and a Colonoscopy are performed at the same time so that you only have to go under anesthesia once.
