Knowing What to Expect

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming or scary if you don’t know what to expect. You may have some unanswered questions and worries that make you feel this way. Knowing what to expect will help you feel less nervous and more in control.

Eye muscle surgery is known as Strabismus surgery. Strabismus surgery is used to loosen or tighten eye muscles which will change the eye’s alignment. Your eye muscles are attached to the wall of the eye, called the sclera.

The conjunctiva is a layer of tissue that covers the muscles.

Your surgeon will hold open the eyelid to access the eye, and make an incision in the conjunctiva in order to reach the eye muscle. Then, a small hook is used to isolate the muscle or muscles being operated on.

After surgery, it is normal for the white of your eyes to be red. This redness will disappear over time.
