Knowing What to Expect

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming or scary if you don’t know what to expect. You may have some unanswered questions and worries that make you feel this way. Knowing what to expect will help you feel less nervous and more in control.

Often, a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy and ear tube procedure will be done at the same time. Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are done to remove infected tonsils and adenoids respectively.

BMT, or bilateral myringotomy and tubes, is a procedure done to remove fluid inside the ear, help reduce pain and pressure, and can help prevent future infections. In a BMT surgery, small tubes are placed in the eardrums to allow air flow.

These tubes allow air to flow behind the eardrums, causing the fluid to either drain out or dry up. These surgeries are usually done for children, and can be done at the same time so the child does not have to go through three separate surgeries.
